A Podcast With Tim McClinton: Top 5 Takeaways on Proctoring, AI, and More

| Blog Articles | Share:

Tim McClinton, Meazure Learning’s CEO, recently sat down John Kleeman—founder of Questionmark and EVP of Learnosity—for an episode of the podcast series Unlocking the Potential of Assessments. Their conversation covered key priorities in the assessment industry, the rise of AI, and Tim’s perspective on how online proctoring can help assessment providers better support their test-takers.

Here are five of the biggest takeaways from this insightful episode.

Takeaway #1: Remote Proctoring Is a Tool for Accessibility

Remote proctoring has evolved into more than just an in-person testing alternative. Tim believes it’s a powerful tool for democratizing access to education and career pathways. With a remote proctoring solution in place, programs can reach test-takers who might otherwise be unable to access in-person centers. Remote proctoring not only broadens a program’s reach to diverse and remote locations but also gives test-takers the freedom to choose the most convenient and comfortable testing environment for their unique needs or preferences.

A positive testing experience, Tim says, starts with clear communication and accessible options. “If we can deliver a better experience to our customers and their test-takers, we’re 100% behind that,” he shared, underscoring the importance of a seamless exam day that places test-taker needs at the forefront.

Takeaway #2: AI Can Help Enhance the Proctoring Experience

Tim views AI as a supportive “co-pilot” for enhancing both test security and experience without diminishing the role of trained professionals. Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for human proctors, Tim sees it as a complementary tool that strengthens the proctoring process by helping identify potential security risks.

“We want to provide options to our customers. If reducing cost [through AI use] is a byproduct, that’s spectacular. But I do believe there are advancements that will continue to improve the proctoring experience without eliminating human oversight entirely,” he explains.

Takeaway #3: All Eyes Are on Security, Flexibility, and the Test-Taker Experience

According to Tim, assessment programs must prioritize three core elements: security, a consistent test-taker experience, and the ability to flexibly scale. He explains that without robust security measures, other program goals can’t be fully realized. But those measures shouldn’t come at the expense of the test-taker experience or the program’s scalability, which are equally important to ensuring accessible and adaptable assessment practices.

Takeaway #4: AI’s Potential in Assessment Will Unfold Gradually

When asked about AI’s future role in assessments, Tim acknowledges the potential but cautioned against hype: “I do believe that AI will have a material impact on our industry … but it may take longer than some folks think.” While AI is making strides in item development and exam administration, he foresees a future where it’s used in every facet of the business to create more streamlined, cost-effective testing experiences.

Takeaway #5: A Customer-Centric Culture Drives Innovation

Tim notes that Meazure Learning’s culture—rooted in entrepreneurial spirit, collaboration, and empowerment—supports the company’s ongoing innovation and client success. In a world where technology advances rapidly, Tim believes that staying anchored in these values helps the company remain adaptable and client-focused. “If we help our customers [be] successful and grow, we—by default—grow,” he explains. This dedication to customer success guides the company’s adoption of new tools and strategies that help users thrive.
